Your smile creates a lasting impression on those around you. When your teeth are dull and discolored, it can send the wrong message. Discolored teeth can also make you self-conscious, and cause you to hide your smile, which can give the impression that you are unfriendly or cold. At Kenneth G. Wallis DDS, Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we can help with Zoom in-office whitening.
What Causes Discoloration?
There are numerous factors that cause tooth discoloration. Many of the causes come from the foods and beverages you enjoy on a daily basis. Foods and beverages such as coffee, red wine, curries, tomato-based dishes and dark berries all have one thing in common. They contain dark pigments that attach themselves to the surface of your teeth, covering over their bright white enamel. Smoking, and the use of other tobacco products is another huge contributing factor to tooth discoloration. Cigarettes contain multiple harmful chemicals. The two responsible for tooth discoloration are tar and nicotine. Tar is naturally dark. Nicotine is colorless until exposed to oxygen. Both leave deep, ugly, set-in stains on the enamel of your teeth.
What Is Zoom Teeth Whitening?
Zoom whitening is a professional in-office whitening system, designed to whiten both your enamel and your dentin. The gel used in the Zoom system is light-activated. The main ingredient in the bleaching agent is hydrogen peroxide. When exposed to the light, the hydrogen peroxide is broken down. It enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching any substance that is discolored. The structure of your teeth remains unaltered in the process.
The entire procedure is completely safe and takes just over an hour. Before your whitening treatment, your teeth are cleaned. Then we use a special device to hold your mouth open, exposing the teeth visible in your smile. A special gel is applied to your gums, which protects them from the bleaching agent. The agent is then applied to your teeth and left for an hour. In just one treatment, results are noticeable right away, getting your teeth, on average, eight shades whiter.
It is important to note that whitening is not a permanent treatment. We will provide you with a set of home care instructions to help prolong the results.
Can You Get the Same Results With Over the Counter Products?
Sure, you can use over the counter whitening products to whiten your teeth. However, these products can take weeks, or even months, to whiten your teeth only a few shades. With Zoom in-office whitening, your teeth are whitened up to 8 shades in just one short treatment.
Zoom Take Home Trays
If you prefer to whiten your teeth on your own time, in the comfort of your own home, we can provide you with Zoom take home trays. We provide you with the trays and the bleaching agent; the rest is up to you. To achieve the best results, the Zoom trays should be worn 4 to 8 hours each day. The exact number of days the trays should be worn will be determined at your consultation. On average, Zoom takes home trays can get your teeth up to 6 shades whiter in just three days.
