Can a root canal fail? May be a question you ask yourself after we tell you that you will need it for that painful tooth. While in most cases the procedure is smooth and without complications, there are instances in which a root canal can fail. What is a Root Canal? This is a procedure that requires numbing, so you don't feel any pain or discomfort. The dentist drills a small hole to reach the root and clean out an infection that is causing your tooth to hurt. The infected tissue is drained and cleaned, and a sealant is used to close the hole. When you Need a Root Canal Most of the time the reason why we recommend you get a root canal is because the pulp inside your tooth, which provides all the nutrients, is infected. If gone untreated, it can lead to more serious problems such as losing your tooth. Why a Root Canal Fails? This procedure has an excellent success rate, but there is a small possibility the procedure could fail. Not cleaning the infection completely is one of the main reasons a root canal fails. This could be due to several reasons as to why a root canal would fail, including the severity of the infection and the time that it was present in the tooth. If the seal has not been applied properly or has deteriorated, this can also cause the root canal to fail and allow the infection to return. Poor oral hygiene can also cause a root canal to fail, so make sure you follow all our instructions carefully after the procedure. While a root canal can fail, it is extremely rare, and we do everything possible to avoid any complications that will cause you pain.
