Most of the time, when a person comes in to see us with a dental chip, it is no big deal. The chip is minor and does not affect the integrity of their natural tooth. We can polish it so that it is not sharp, but many do not even require any type of treatment.
However, that is not the case for all dental chips. Some of them can become a major issue if left untreated or unchecked by us. They can lead to a wide range of problems.
What Can Happen with Untreated Dental Chips
When you leave a dental chip alone, sometimes it will be just fine. The chip may have only knocked a tiny piece of enamel off and left the rest of your tooth whole.
However, when you have a larger chip, or the chip left part of your dentin exposed, this can become a big problem. As you eat, tiny particles of food can get into that area and cause tooth decay. It can also lead to increased chances of tooth sensitivity.
That chip, if you put pressure on that tooth, could also grow. A chip is where a small bit of your tooth actually came off. This can leave tiny microfractures behind. Without smoothing out the tooth's surface, those fractures can grow and you can wind up with cracked or broken teeth as a result.
You never want to ignore a chipped tooth. If it is a minor issue, we will literally just keep an eye on it. However, if it begins to grow or get worse, we will need to treat it. If the chip was larger to begin with, it is best to treat it right away and avoid those consequences. Call our office today to find out more!
