Part of good oral hygiene means knowing how long to brush your teeth for. After all, you want to know that you're getting the best results and that your teeth are getting clean enough.
How Long You Should Brush Your Teeth
Most dentists would agree that you should spend at least two minutes brushing your teeth. However, there are some dentists who say that three minutes is best. You should divide this time equally between your upper and bottom teeth.
Unfortunately, most people don't spend two minutes, let alone three minutes, brushing their teeth today. In fact, this typically seems like a long time to spend brushing your teeth. This is especially true for children, which is why you should set a timer or use an electric toothbrush.
When you don't spend enough time brushing your teeth, they won't get clean enough. You'll leave bacteria behind on your teeth, which can cause serious problems like gingivitis and periodontitis. Heavy plaque in your mouth also causes plaque buildup in your arteries.
What's more important than how long you brush is actually making sure that all of your teeth's surfaces are clean. For this, you'll want to use short strokes while moving back and forth against your teeth and gums.
Make sure you also get around the surface of every tooth. Also, remember that flossing is just as important as brushing.
Sometimes a "refresher course" in how to brush your teeth properly is necessary, even as an adult. Don't forget to ask us for one the next time you stop in for a routine dental appointment.
Of course, if you ever have any questions between your dental visits, all you have to do is pick up your phone and give us a call. We'll be happy to help you then as well.
