What Can Happen if You Floss Too Much?

Flossing Kenneth G. Wallis, DDS Family & Cosmetic Dentistry CA 95050-6503Is it possible to floss too much? The correct answer is, yes, you can. Flossing too much can hurt your mouth. To get your mouth clean, you need to floss one time each day, but you need to floss properly.

If you are not sure how to do this, then ask. Flossing twice is not better for the health of your mouth. It can actually decrease the overall health of your mouth. It is much more important that you do it right once, than to take the risk of hurting your mouth over the long run.

How Should You Be Flossing?

What you want is to consider a few things. First, technique. If you still saw a piece of floss back and forth, then you are doing things the wrong way. You want to scrape off each tooth with a clean piece of floss.

If you need a lesson, ask us to show you. It is the best way we can teach you. Second, tool. You can use traditional floss, waxed or unwaxed is your decision. However, you also have other options. There are power flossers, air flossers, and water flossers that you can use now.

They all have perks to them, so figure out which one you like best. Finally, time. It takes more than one minute to floss, if you want to do it right. However, it is not going to take an hour, either. It should take you less than ten minutes, and that will leave you doing a good job with each area of your mouth.

Flossing too much puts pressure on your gums and can damage them. Do not take the risk of doing something to hurt your mouth by trying to overachieve. Floss the right way once each day, and your oral health will be in good shape.
